American FactFinder: Why doesn’t American FactFinder display properly in my browser?

This occurs if the Internet browser used to access American FactFinder is out of date, in compatibility mode or it needs the cache cleared.

 

Browser version

American FactFinder (AFF) supports common up-to-date browsers. Make sure the browser used to access AFF is up to date. See FAQ# 1585 for common browsers supported by AFF.

 

Compatibility View for Microsoft Internet Explorer

Turn off Compatibility View. Tools> Compatibility View Settings > Websites you’ve added to Compatibility View > select “census.gov” > Click “Remove” > Close

Since browsers cache some of the web tier files (*.js; *.css) by name, whenever an updated or new version of AFF is released, the content of these files changes but some browsers do not always detect the change to get a fresh file. Instead, they continue to serve the files from the local cache, creating a confusing and error-prone mix of new and old files. As a result, some American FactFinder User Interface elements (buttons, text boxes, etc.) may not function correctly.

 

To correct this issue and properly display American FactFinder, clear the browser cache as follows:


In FireFox:

Tools -> Advanced -> Network -> Clear Now.


In Firefox for Windows or Mac OS X:
History -> Clear Recent History (OR for Windows – Select the History menu from the orange Firefox button in Firefox 4 and above) -> From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu select the desired range to clear; To clear your entire cache, select Everything -> Click the down arrow next to "Details" -> check Browsing & Download History, Form & Search History, Cookies, and Cache -> Clear Now.


In Microsoft Internet Explorer:
Tools -> Delete Browsing History -> Have Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History checked -> Deselect Preserve Favorites website data -> Delete.

 

In Chrome:
Enter:  chrome://settings/clearBrowserData in the browser bar -> Select the items you want to clear (e.g., Clear browsing history, Clear download history, Empty the cache, Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data) -> Select the period of time to clear your cache in the Obliterate the following items from: drop-down menu (Note: to clear your entire cache, select the beginning of time) -> Clear browsing data.


In Safari:

Safari menu -> Reset Safari... -> Select the items you want to reset -> Reset. (Note: As of Safari 5.1, Remove all website data will include both cookies and cache).
