You can use TIGERweb to view geographic boundaries used in the American Community Survey (ACS). In this example, we will view the 2020 Census PUMAs maps.
-
Start by visiting the TIGERweb Applications page.
-
In the TIGERweb Applications box on the left side of the screen, select the TIGERweb link.
-
The TIGERweb interactive map will launch, and you will see a Layers panel on the left side of the screen. Use the dropdown menu to select the appropriate vintage and then zoom in on the map to your approximate area of interest. This will allow you to view more detail on the map as you select more options.
-
After you select the desired vintage, click on the box next to the PUMAs, UGAs, and ZCTAs layer. Once you click on the box, a check mark will appear and the PUMA layer becomes active.
-
Next, expand the layer by clicking on the plus sign next to the PUMAs, UGAs, and ZCTAs layer name. You will see two geographic areas: 2020 Census Public Use Microdata Areas and 2020 Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. De-activate the 2020 Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area by clicking on the check mark in the box next to the layer name. Now you can view the 2020 Census PUMA boundaries.
The ACS Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files use updated PUMA boundaries after every decennial census. Learn more about Geography Boundaries by Year on the ACS website.
