Almost all data the Census Bureau produces are available for free on the Internet. Customers sometimes would like to access the data in a format not available over the Internet. In those cases, they may be able to get the data at a modest cost.

  • For example, census maps are available on the Internet in PDF format, but are far easier to read on paper, so we sell them in printed form, as well as on disc.
  • Census 2000 Summary Files are available online in the American FactFinder but you may find it easier to access large data sets (e.g., a table for all 33,178 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas®) from the easy-to-use DVDs or CD-ROMs. The Census 2000 Summary File DVDs or CD-ROMs are available at no cost.
Librarians and archivists often need data in printed form and as a result may decide to purchase a print-on-demand report as a substitute for the free online PDF document.
