To simplify the process to access data from the 2020 Census, we released all available Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) tables under one product name on data.census.gov. This improvement makes it easy to find data for all geographies in one place.

The product name and survey filter used for 2020 Census Redistricting Data is Redistricting Data (PL 94-171).

For the 2010 Census, we released Redistricting Data under two separate product filters. These datasets provide access to the same 5 tables, but cover different types of geographies:

  • National Redistricting Data – Provides data for geographies that can cross state boundaries, such as the nation, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical areas, and American Indian Areas/Alaska Native Areas/Hawaiian Home Lands.
  • Redistricting Data (PL 94-171) – Provides data for geographies at the state level and below, or for portions of geographies contained within a state. For example, this includes counties, cities/towns, census tracts, and blocks.

If you are able to access 2020 Census Redistricting Data for a geography but are having trouble comparing it back to the 2010 Census following the steps in this short video, you may be clicked into the incorrect product. We recommend checking to see if the data are available through the National Redistricting Data filter by following these steps:

  • Open the filter panel
  • Under the "Years" heading, select 2010

Filter panel on data.census.gov. It shows the user clicking 2010 under the "Years" heading.

  • Under the "Surveys" heading, select Decennial Census → National Redistricting Data

Screenshot of the filter panel on data.census.gov. Under the "Surveys" heading, it shows the user clicking Decennial Census > National Redistricting Data.

  • Under the "Geography" heading, click All Geographies and click the Summary Levels tab. Geographic areas that are compatible with this dataset are shown in the list.

Screenshot of the geography filter panel on data.census.gov. It shows the user clicking "All Geographies" and then clicking the tab at the top for "Summary Levels."

  • Then follow the prompts to choose your desired geography, such as 010 - United States → United States.
  • Click Search in the lower right

Screenshot of the geography filter panel on data.census.gov. It shows the user clicking the filter for the United States and then clicking the Search button in the lower right.

  • Click Tables at the top, and view your results

Please also keep in mind that table P5 is new data table for the 2020 Redistricting Data release. If you would like to compare group quarters data back to 2010, please use table P42 from the 2010 Census Summary File 1.

Anytime you compare data over time, we also recommend comparing geography boundaries over the same time period to check for changes. This will help you determine if any changes you see in the data are true changes in population/housing counts or if the geographic area referenced has also changed over time, which could impact interpretation of the results.

Our Geography Division offers a few easy-to-use resources to help compare 2020 geographies to 2010 geographies. To get help with these resources, please contact geo.geography@census.gov:

  • TIGERweb Decennial Mapping Application: Allows you to visualize changes in boundaries from 2020 to 2010.
  • Relationship Files: Files to compare 2020 geographies to 2010 geographies.
