No. The U.S. Census Bureau is committed to producing quality statistical data, while upholding its mandate to safeguard privacy and protect the confidentiality of all individuals who share their information with us. We publish aggregate statistics showing the characteristics of the American people and make it available on the internet. These statistics do not reveal names, addresses or any other information that would identify an individual respondent or business.
Title 13 of the U.S. Code strictly prohibits the Census Bureau from releasing personal data collected on an individual or business for any purpose to anyone or any other federal, state or local government. The law carries a fine of up to $250,000 and up to five years imprisonment for employees who violate this statute.
As the leading source of quality data about the nation's people, the Census Bureau routinely receives requests for data from individuals and organizations. It is our policy to assist requestors with their special data needs. Even though enormous amounts of data are on the web, not everything can be made available. Therefore we prepare special tabulations that might be based on confidential data or perform data extracts from existing data sets. The special tabulations and statistical extracts that we prepare yield files of anonymous, non-identifiable data that have been scrutinized to ensure that the confidentiality of respondents is not compromised.
Additionally, our Are You in a Survey page provides some general guidance on issues pertaining to those participants who fall within either a business or household census or survey.
